High Desert Drama: The Top 3 Public Golf Courses in Central Oregon

High Desert Drama: The Top 3 Public Golf Courses in Central Oregon

Central Oregon remains one of golf's best-kept secrets. While coastal resorts like Bandon Dunes dominate the conversation, the high desert region surrounding Bend has quietly assembled a collection of world-class public courses that rivals almost any destination in the country. Within a 30-minute drive, you can experience an extraordinary range of golf styles and landscapes.

Consider what's possible in a single weekend: In the morning, you could challenge yourself on the links-style fairways of Tetherow, where wild greens and strategic positioning demand respect. By afternoon, you could test your accuracy on the high desert elegance of Pronghorn's Nicklaus Course, where immaculate conditions and desert hazards present a different kind of puzzle. Add Brasada Ranch's stunning volcanic vistas and more forgiving layout, or venture to Sunriver Resort, where three courses offer everything from accessible parkland to the stunning heathland challenge of Crosswater, with its gorgeous views and heart-stopping carries. It's rare for a relatively small area to offer such distinct and memorable courses, each with a completely different personality and all within arm's reach of one another.

Despite this abundance, Central Oregon remains overlooked compared to other destination golf spots. That's good news for you—fewer crowds, easier access, and some of the best golf experiences in the Pacific Northwest. Here are the three courses that define why Central Oregon deserves a place on every serious golfer's bucket list.

Nicklaus Course at Pronghorn

1

Nicklaus Course at Pronghorn

Pronghorn's Nicklaus Course is a high desert masterpiece that rewards careful strategy and precise execution. Located in the secluded Juniper Preserve resort about 30 minutes east of Bend, the course shines with a stunning desert landscape, immaculate conditions nearly year-round, and a back nine that ranks among the finest stretches of golf in the country. Tee shots require modest carries over brush, but approach shots—heavily guarded by bunkers and desert hazards—are where the real challenge lies. Once you reach the greens, the conditions are so flawless that putting is a joy. The back nine, particularly holes 12 through 17, boasts a level of beauty and challenge that rivals parts of Bandon Dunes. If you play only one course in Central Oregon, make it Pronghorn's Nicklaus Course.

Tetherow Golf Course

2

Tetherow Golf Course

Tetherow is the most polarizing course in Central Oregon. This links-style course, designed by David McKlay Kidd just minutes from downtown Bend, challenges golfers with fast, firm grass and fescue that punishes even slight miscalculations. The greens are wild and undulating, requiring intimate knowledge to avoid three-putts from the wrong tier. While the course's reputation for difficulty is well-earned, those who embrace its unique challenges find a course that only improves with familiarity. Learn where to aim off the tee, when to lay up, and how to read the greens, and Tetherow becomes a course you remember vividly. It's not for everyone—particularly if you're a high-handicapper averse to a rough day—but for links purists, it's a one-of-a-kind Central Oregon experience.

Crosswater Golf Course

3

Crosswater Golf Course

Crosswater stands above its sister courses at Sunriver Resort, consistently earning a spot on national Top 100 Public Courses lists. This heathland gem earns its distinction through a stunning combination of beauty, challenge, and uniqueness. The course's signature feature—old wooden bridges that cross water on seemingly every hole—gives Crosswater its character and forces you to pause regularly to absorb the scenery. Located in picturesque Sunriver, about 30 minutes south of Bend, Crosswater offers a different aesthetic than the links-style Tetherow or desert elegance of Pronghorn. The course is more expensive than Sunriver's other offerings (Meadows and Woodlands), but it's worth the price for a round that combines parkland beauty with genuine challenge. For a publicly-accessible course that feels special every time you play it, Crosswater is hard to beat.

Tips on Central Oregon Golf

Difficulty

The three courses vary dramatically in difficulty. Pronghorn plays challenging but fair for mid-to-low handicaps. Tetherow is genuinely punishing and best suited for skilled golfers. Crosswater is the most accessible of the three while still presenting a strong test. Choose based on your game and tolerance for difficulty.

Accommodations

All three courses offer overnight accommodations. Tetherow is nestled in the town of Bend, with excellent options for restaurants and activities before or after your round. Crosswater is part of Sunriver Resort, a family-focused destination about 30 minutes south of Bend. And Pronghorn is part of Juniper Preserve, a resort in a secluded area about 30 minutes northeast of Bend that's better suited for couples than families.

Seasons

Pronghorn is often playable year round, but Tetherow and Sunriver close for the winter seasons. In Central Oregon, golf season typically picks up in April, but it can still be cold and even snowing that time of year. September and October are the sneaky values, when the weather is still often fantastic but greens fees (and the tourist crowds of Bend) go down.

Fazio at Pronghorn

Pronghorn's sister course, designed by Tom Fazio, is equally world-class as the Nicklaus course but typically reserved for members or resort guests with exclusive packages. If you have access, don't pass it up.

Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated; it satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect. It is at the same time rewarding and maddening — and it is without a doubt the greatest game mankind has ever invented.
